A Quick Word On Optimism

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

In recent years literature and courses about attracting or manifesting desired realities have become increasingly popular. However such ideology is far from new; classic spiritual and self help works from the 20th century covered this topic in great, effective detail.

Just a few well-known examples include “Think And Grow Rich” and  “Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude” (Napoleon Hill), “Thought Vibrations” (William Atkinson), “Power Of Positive Thinking” (Norman Vincent Peale), plus many other titles that preceded the recent trend in manifestation/attraction content.

I haven’t posted articles about the specifics of deliberate manifestation up to this point, but it’s something I’ll definitely look at in the near future. Many of my readers will be versed with ideals such as “law of attraction” and/or concepts like “the power of positive thinking”, so hopefully this content will resonate with most regular visitors.

If the idea of creating your own reality is new to you, please have an open mind and realistically consider the obvious impact your thoughts and feelings have on your day-to-day affairs. No metaphysical or spiritual belief systems are needed to note the various ways your thinking and emotional states affect those around you and the manner in which you perceive the events of your life.

You passively attract people, circumstances, and events into your life that reflect your primary thought patterns and strongest emotional impulses. This is true even if you aren’t trying to deliberately manifest something.

When you shift your focus toward intentionally creating a specific outcome, your results will be filtered through your dominant thoughts and emotions. There is no escaping this reality.

Obviously it’s critical to maintain a positive and empowered frame of mind. Your objective should be to train yourself to hold positive intentions and expectations at all times, and to immediately shift back toward the positive any time you are upset or disrupted by a negative experience or setback.

Most dictionaries define optimism as follows:

  1. A disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome.
  2. The belief that goodness pervades reality, and the existing world is the best of all possible worlds.

It is to your advantage to always seek the positive in any situation, to expect the best possible outcome, and to simply decide that every experience contains a lesson and moves you toward your ideal condition.

You can and should…

Focus Your Entire Being Toward Optimism

The first step is to begin thinking, feeling, imagining, and talking about the most positive and supportive circumstances and events possible. Consistent practice will literally adjust your default setting to that you automatically think positively and hold an optimistic outlook on life.

You can also begin the policy of dismissing any negative thoughts that arise automatically and shifting spontaneous negative emotions toward more positive feelings. Most people fail to realize two critical things about the human mind:

  1. Thoughts flow automatically like water down a stream, and our thinking does not always necessarily reflect who we are and what we want.
  2. Emotional impulses may arise without our conscious choosing, but once an emotion is activated it can be directed or interpreted however we wish.

In other words you decide which of your thoughts have power, and you choose which emotions to hold onto from one moment to the next. You are not, never have been, and need not ever be a slave to the automatic thoughts and feelings that arise from within you.

You have the power to choose optimism as your natural state. Negative feelings exist for a reason and have a healthy place in life but in almost every situation you are better served by shifting away from thinking and emotions that fail to support your ideal vision.

Gratitude is the easiest way to strengthen your optimism and settle your attention on good and supportive thinking. Whatever your life situation you undoubtedly have many things to appreciate and be thankful for. Focus on what’s right in your life and allow genuine appreciation to flow through your awareness. Being grateful for what you already have, and for what you know you’ll soon have, is the key to positive thinking and living.

How To Take Positive Action Now:

Form the habit of visualizing all areas of your life exactly as you want them to be. See the desired life situations as clearly as possible and actually get into the emotional state of being there.

You can make visualization a formal practice that you do every morning for ten or so minutes. And you can casually play with your ideal visions throughout the day as you move about your normal affairs.

Positive affirmations are a fantastic way of training your unconscious mind to function in an optimistic capacity. Use standard index cards to create affirmations to support each of your life goals and read these positive statements at least twice each day.

All your affirmations should be:

  • Framed in positive language only. (”am healthy” instead of “not sick”)
  • Stated in the present tense as if you already embody the condition.
  • Clear and to the point, plus easy to remember.

Practice feeling the appropriate emotions as you say your affirmations. It may help to remember positive events related to each affirmation; for instance when you are affirming wealth think back to the biggest check you’ve ever taken to the bank and access the emotional thrill of this event.

Any time a negative or self-defeating thought passes through your mind, acknowledge it, challenge it, and then completely release it. If you’re manifesting a trim, fit, body and catch yourself thinking “I’ve always been fat and I always will be, this is hopeless”, note the thought, firmly reject it, and turn your attention to the truth of “I am choosing to be thin and fit and no force in this world can stop me”.

By the same token whenever a strong negative emotion arises, notice it, let it go, and then shift in the direction of a more ideal emotion. For example if you feel a strong surge of hopelessness and despair, be present with the feelings for a moment, then let go and imagine this energy leaving your body. Adjust your feeling state toward a healthy anger (How dare that despair bother me right now; I just wont’ have it!), and from here move your attention toward feelings of relief and excitement. You don’t have to try and jump right from despair to jubilation, and frankly you won’t always be able to. Multiple small shifts that lead up the emotional scale are an easy way to manage your feeling state and maintain your optimistic outlook.

Remember to pay attention to your body’s subtle (and not-so-subtle) signals and indications. The body is every bit as spiritual as the mind and you’ll gain loads of insight by paying attention to the way your physical frame and form feel during moments of positive or negative emotion. With practice you can actually initiate optimistic consciousness by intentionally shifting your form and/or moving your body in a certain manner! I’ll make a point to post some specific tips about this in the future.

I hope this info is helpful. Thanks for reading and be sure to post your comments!

Understanding And Developing Personal Power

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

A key component of spiritual growth is Personal Power. In various forms and under myriad names, this concept has been a focal point of spiritual travelers for thousands of years.

The extent to which you understand and master your personal power will play a vital role in every spiritual pursuit, from intentionally manifesting your ideal reality or finding your life’s purpose, to understanding the lessons of life and being of genuine service to others.

What Exactly Is Personal Power?

Personal power is your essential capacity to transmit, direct or redirect, receive, transmute, deflect, deactivate, and otherwise interact with individual, collective, and cosmic energies. This is obviously a very broad statement, but the intangible nature of the subject matter requires a somewhat abstract conceptualization.

Put more simply: Personal Power is the dynamic component of your connection with the higher mind and the causal force (or source).

Beyond the level of ego mind, we all have access to a higher self and/or collective consciousness. So too are we all connected to the energetic source from which all reality flows.

The relevant distinction is the clarity and quality of your union with the higher mind and causal plane. In other words, the cleaner and more open your connection to source is, the greater your personal power will be.

Contributing factors at the level of body, emotions, and intellect include self esteem, gratitude, generosity, focus, the ability to relax, and many other attributes. It’s fair to say the more balanced, healthy, and engaged you are at the physical, emotional, and intellectual levels, the more empowered you can become.

How Relevant Is Personal Power To My Daily Life?

The impact of personal power can be very concrete, far-reaching, profound, and spectacular. Alternatively, personal force can be quiet, subtle, passive, and still.

Whether soft or hard, the manifestation of personal power is always about both your unique contribution of intent and the freedom with which universal source is able to express in and through your form.

So while the term “personal” is used to designate your individual sense of empowerment, the ability to trust and experience your connection to the infinite consciousness of the Universe is actually the most relevant factor. Too much pressure and presumption from your ego center will actually negate your effectiveness in this area.

The more aware you are of your oneness with the field of energy at the source of all things, the greater your personal power will be. For this reason terms such as “life force”, “spirit”, and “essence” are interchangeable with “personal power”. Ancient traditions from around the world provide insights to the nature and application of this force, and you’ve probably heard or read about concepts like Chi, Ki, Prana, and many others.

I may refer to specific systems and practices throughout the content of this site, but I intend to avoid promoting any specific, formal doctrine. Terminology and formality are secondary to the actual experience.

The essential spiritual quest is the enhancement of personal power, as this is the root of expansion, growth, joy, and fulfillment.

Regarding the practice of deliberate manifestation, your personal power will define the clarity of your vision and purpose, the magnitude of energy you can direct toward your desires, the strength and integrity of your vibration, the patience with which you enjoy each new moment, your level of gratitude and compassion, plus much more.

In day-to-day living, everything from your confidence and ability to draw boundaries in relationships to your sensitivity toward another’s feelings and your ability to say the right thing at the right time will play out in accordance with your level of personal power.

Without a doubt the enhancement of your individual force should be a foremost value.

How Can You Experience Optimal Personal Power?

There are actually several things you can do to increase personal power. Below are a few worthwhile suggestions.

Some listings will provide a link for more information, but this isn’t the case for each item below. The following systems and practices will probably come up in more detail in future articles. I just wanted to provide a brief synopsis and overview of a dozen quality pursuits.

Relax and avoid feeling any pressure to take on everything on the following list. Enjoy the suggestions that resonate with you and leave the others for someone else to play with.

1. Mindfulness Practice

The simple practice of living in the present moment will expand and enhance you in a multitude of ways. Embracing silence through regular meditation and just allowing each moment to unfold without straining against it or overthinking are the logical first steps to any spiritual power program.

2. Basic Physical Exercise

A fit, flexible, energized body is the key to instant focus and long-term enthusiasm. Your body is every bit as sacred and spiritual as your mind and it’s important to care for yourself on the physical plane. Simple walking sessions (20-30 minutes at least) are a fantastic start; light weight training, calisthenics, and sports are additional opportunities to care for and tone your body while having fun in the process.

3. Hatha Yoga

The different forms of Hatha Yoga allow you to engage in physical exercise that is specifically designed to activate and enhance the body’s subtle energy centers and pathways. You’ll get the benefits of a great workout plus direct access to your personal energy grid.

4. Chakra Meditations

A basic introduction to and study of your chakra centers is another way to access and work directly with your natural energy grid. The chakras are centers of energy and consciousness found at certain points in your body, with the major seven being along your spinal pathway. Developing an awareness of these centers and learning to move energy through them is an amazing process of discovery and growth.

5. EFT Tapping

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a fascinating system that involves locating and tapping along specific paths and points on your body to release negative energy and restore positive energy. The results you can get with only a small amount of education are astonishing. The best digital resource I’ve found for learning the basics of EFT is the Tap Yourself Free mini-course by Magnus over at “Tapping Tips”.

6. Energy Channeling Systems

There are a wide range of systems that teach you to directly harness, project, and otherwise work with the flow of life force. In many Eastern martial and monastic systems such as Reiki, Aikido, Tai Chi, Yoga, Qigong, and others you’ll find a very wide variety of philosophies, methods, movements, and rituals that can plug you directly into the free moving energy of the universe. With time and patience you can literally feel the heat and power building in your palms and coursing through your body as you practice. I have seen and participated in what can only be described as miracles through my involvement in systems of this nature and I highly recommend this pursuit to anyone with an interest.

7. Regular Reading And Studying

Knowledge and a fit, active intellectual mind are important aspects of personal power. By simply reading for 15-20 minutes per day you’ll expand your wisdom and mental capacity far beyond the norm. Consider that 15 minutes per day will result in 1 or more books per month, or 12 books minimum per year – that’s 60 new books every five years! I recommend business, spirituality, philosophy, marketing, personal development, psychology, and even entertaining fiction to tone and empower those mental muscles and expand your personal power.

8. Personal Development Programs

Personal development, self help, self improvement – whatever you may call it – is a vital part of growing your power and becoming your ideal self. You should understand that all of your favorite writers, speakers, teachers, and coaches are investing considerable time and money on personal development. Listen to audios while driving, take advantage of free teleclasses online, look for local presentations at Unitarian churches and entrepreneurial organizations, and put together your own unique program to refine your strengths and address your weaknesses.

I’ll be reviewing books/programs and recommending a few specific practices that I enjoy in future articles.

9. Traditional Talk Therapy

Contrary to what the obtuse mainstream thinks, you don’t need to be “sick” or crazy to benefit tremendously from traditional therapy and counseling. Having a trained professional to talk with and share your thoughts can do you a whole world of good! Imagine how great it would be to be able to look at yourself with total objectivity; you’d be more effective, compassionate, and productive. This is a great way to connect with yourself and discover new potential.

10. Dowsing

Dowsing is a spiritual practice that allows you to quickly get information and direct/transform energy using simple tools and a combination of ancient and modern techniques. Though I knew about this method for years, I got involved with dowsing for the first time in 2008. If you have an open mind you’ll catch on very fast, and the odds are great you’ll be no less than astonished by what you can achieve with this quiet pursuit.

The man who introduced me to the art of dowsing is named Raymon Grace. We’ll be looking at some of his techniques later, and perhaps even having him along for an interview or a couple of seminars. In the meantime I urge you to have a look at Raymon’s Website.

11. Crystals And Gemstones

Most ancient cultures around the world have revered gemstones, crystal formations, and many similar objects that come from the earth. From China and Greece to Ireland and Native America, various personal and spiritual properties have been assigned to gems and crystals based on colors, shapes, folklore, and the regions where these treasures are typically found. Many people believe each type of crystal has a special magnetic energy, while others suggest this field is all about conditioning the unconscious mind.

Personally I have an immense collection of crystals, and these wonderful tools are a big part of my daily meditation and energy work. I’ll be incorporating this into future content but if you’d like to know more now I recommend visiting any “New Age” bookstore or geology shop in your town.

12. Having Fun

Lest all this stuff start to sound like hard work, let me remind you that having a good time, laughing, and enjoying life is perhaps the best way to enhance your personal power! Life is, after all, about expansion and happiness in this moment. Catching a movie with a friend, playing your favorite games, having sex, taking trips to new cities, camping, sports, coin collecting, anything you enjoy immensely needs to be a major part of your life.

If I had to recommend only one item from this list, it would be the one you’re reading right now. If life can’t be fun and sincerely enjoyable what’s the point?

Understand that your personal power reflects and is influenced from the physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and energetic spheres of your existence. Therefore a complete spectrum of practices and methodology is ideal for maximum enhancement.

I hope you’ve found this information useful. In the future when I write about the use of Personal Power I’ll link back to this post. There is MUCH more that can be said on this topic, but as with most things spiritual you’ll be filling in the blanks with your own experiences and insights.

Is Self Help Just For Losers?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Self help, self improvement, or (my preference) personal development all refer to the same general class of literature, coaching programs, home study courses, and seminar events. While the sad, shallow mainstream tends to make fun of this type of content, the world’s most successful people actively embrace personal development as a way of life.

Self Help Is For Dorks And Dweebs

Why do prime time sitcoms tend to cast self help books and programs, along with those who read or participate in them, as being somehow “uncool” or foolish? Probably to support the mainline consensus that insists folks like Anthony Robbins, Eckhart Tolle, and others in various personal growth niches are “whackos”, “con artists”, etc.

What does it mean when The Simpsons air a whole episode making fun of Homer’s newfound desire to follow the advice of a fictional self-help guru? Likewise what’s the underlying intent when the characters of a popular half-hour sitcom crack jokes about well-known personal development writers and speakers?

In the case of TV and related media, this is all done to help the audience feel better about their mediocre, unfulfilled lives. The message can be seen as something like “just keep that job you hate, or settle for a crappy marriage, or accept being unhealthy, et. al,  and don’t fall for silly scams that urge you to be a better person”.

Modern society trains us to settle for less than what our innate potential might allow. Sentiments of “good enough” and “don’t get your hopes up” are deeply ingrained and intentionally sustained by popular culture.

I recently saw an article in a dumbdown magazine (Details I think) entitled “Self Help Not Just For Losers Anymore“. I got the subscription as a freebie with an online order, and occasionally browse just to see what kind of mind numbing tactics are currently popular with the American media sleeze.

This article pointed out that, since the public acknowledgment of a recession (actually a depression) more people had been buying self improvement material, and the self help industry in general is now booming. Details magazine caters to an utterly shallow and clueless audience and clearly promotes the idea that anyone seeking self-knowledge or personal development must be some kind of dork. Kind of these goobers to throw a nod of slight approval in the direction of a truly great industry now that more mainstreamers are catching on.

Again, the core reasons popular media and culture strive to support the image of personal development as not hip, unnecessary, weak, etc. are:

  1. To make their audiences feel better about giving up on their dreams like good, “realistic” citizens.
  2. To keep people dumb, uninformed, and disengaged from any kind of authentic passion in life.

Why would publishers and media producers want to do this? Sluggish, uninspired, self-loathing idiots make the ideal consumer here in America and within cultures who (sadly) seek to mimic the American social model.

Stay In Your Comfort Zone Where You Belong

The Western media (magazines, TV, radio, music industry, movies, etc.) isn’t satisfied with simply portraying personal growth and self development as lame. These ridiculous sources of information aggressively encourage ignorance, resignation, and mediocrity.

You’ve probably watched the main character in a sitcom start a plan to make more money, lose weight, or something along these lines only to fail or give up by the end of the episode. The “moral” of these stories is simple: it’s fine to remain stagnant – everyone else is – and  real change is usually impossible anyway.

News Media Conditioning Against All That Silly Self Help Jive

Look at how the media had a field day with the tragic deaths taking place at one of James Ray’s events in 2009. Ray is author of Harmonic Wealth – a book I highly recommend – and was an interviewee featured on The Secret. During a “Spiritual Warrior” retreat three people died, and investigators believe these deaths resulted from a prolonged fast followed by exposure to an improperly ventilated sweat lodge.

What an awful disaster this was! If Ray’s lodge was faulty, if he had insufficient medical staff on hand, etc. then he should be held liable for what happened; I’m not going to defend this tragedy as I have no firsthand knowledge of the circumstances.

Regardless of James Ray’s guilt or innocence in the three deaths, the news media had no valid cause for attacking his philosophies, how much money he makes per year, or the personal development industry as a whole. Yet a number of journalists wasted no time slamming the author and speaker and framing him as a charlatan and cheat.

His event cost thousands of dollars, so he must be a hack.

People have been injured at his highly physical events before, so he must have no regard for his customers’ safety.

The reality is: Individuals attending these high-end events are typically successful professionals who are willing to pay top dollar for intense personal coaching. It’s also safe to say participants know well in advance they are signing on for rigorously challenging physical trials.

Because Ray is “just another self help guru” everyone wanted in on the slander fest. Newspaper and TV audiences were informed reassuringly that so long as they had the smarts to steer clear of all that self improvement rubbish they would be safe from this kind of tragic accident.

Interviews of former self help enthusiasts who complained about losing money to “scams” were paraded as social proof that anything personal development related belonged in the same category as Ponzi schemes and email fraud. These victims forlornly spoke of programs that “didn’t work at all” and relayed their tales of disenchantment and bitterness.

In my experience people with stories of this nature are quite often folks who bought a book or signed up for a course and then did little to nothing in the way of actual work. They made a cash investment hoping for some magic spell that would solve their problems while they sat in front of the TV night after night.

One woman in particular harshly criticized one of Ray’s past courses as “stupid”, saying that at least it had “cured her of self help for good”. I don’t even know how to respond properly to the idea that one can or should be cured of the urge to grow and develop at the emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual levels. Does this mean she’ll gladly live out the rest of her life as she now is, without any effort toward becoming a better person or learning new things about herself?

Who Needs Personal Development?

The very idea that only people who are messed up need personal development is flawed. While self awareness and personal growth are the answers to most problems faced by individuals, families, teams, and couples it’s also true that refinement and expansion are rewards in and of themselves.

Life is a dynamic journey of learning, sharing, and growing. It only makes PERFECT sense to proactively work toward being your personal best at all levels.

Entrepreneurs like Robert Kiyosaki, Donald Trump, and Richard Bransan understand and leverage the power of continuous personal  development.

So too do great philanthropists like Mother Theresa.

Gandhi embodied the very essence of expanding and honing the self, as did Einstein.

Michael Jordan,  Tiger Woods, and Peyton Manning grasp and apply the principles of self improvement day after day.

HOWEVER YOU CHOOSE TO DEFINE SUCCESS, PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT IS A CRITICAL ASPECT OF THE PROCESS!

It should be abundantly obvious that life is most vibrant and satisfying when you…

  • deliberately learn as much as possible about yourself
  • know clearly what you want
  • take action toward becoming your personal best
  • contribute to society from your pool of talents and strengths

It should be equally clear that  any media system or content source that depicts such mindset and philosophy as unfashionable or negative – in any way – is both ethically and factually flawed.

Many of my readers come from personal development or spirituality sites. However I also publish content and gain subscribers in political, social, conspiratorial, and other arenas. If you’re not currently exploring any personal growth programs I urge you to set aside some time to try it on.

Life IS growth. Your natural inclination, physically and non-physically,  is to develop and expand. You (body, emotions, intellect) are constantly changing whether you consciously participate in the process or not. It only makes sense to put some loving attention on yourself so you can enjoy your time on this planet to the absolute fullest, and so you can be a true blessing to those you love.
